APRIL 1
Prevention of Blindness week.
Several science research institutes were established on this day, such as the Indian Agricultural Re- search Institute in 1905, Central Potato Research Institute in 1935, Postgrad- uate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in 1962, and Centre for Molecular and Cellular Biology in 1977.
Missile Woman of India Tessy Thomas was born on April 1, 1963. She is the Director General of Aeronautical Systems and former Project Director for Agni-IV missile at DRDO.

World Autism Awareness Day.
APRIL 4
Indian-American scientist Ananda Chakrabarty, who patented the first geneti- cally engineered life-form, was born in 1938.
APRIL 6
International Day of Sports for Development and Peace.
Foundation stone of the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute in New Delhi was laid in 1949.
APRIL 7
G. N. Ramachandran, Indian biophysicist who
discovered the triple helical “coiled coil” structure
of the collagen molecule, passed away in 2001.
The World Health Or- ganisation (WHO) was established in 1948.
World Health Day is celebrated worldwide every year since 1950.

Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Insti- tute was established in 1954 in Bhavnagar, Gujarat.
Birbal Sahni, an Indian pa- laeobotanist who founded the Institute of Palaeo- botany in Lucknow, died in 1949.

National Safe Motherhood Day.

Renowned civil engineer and 19th Diwan of Mysore state, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, died in 1962 in Bengaluru. He served
as the chief engineer of the Krishna Raj Sagar dam built on river Cauvery out- side the city of Mysore.

Indian-Swiss mathemati- cian Komaravolu Chan- drasekhar, known for his work in number theory and summability, died in 2017.
APRIL 15
Sambhunath De, an Indian medical scientist who dis- covered the cholera toxin, died in 1915.
APRIL 16
The first passenger train ran in India between Bombay (Bori Bunder) and Thane in 1853. It was hauled by three steam locomotives: Sahib, Sindh and Sultan.
APRIL17
Rohini Satellite RS-D2 was launched onboard SLV-3 from SHAR Centre, Sriharikota, in 1983.
APRIL 18
GSAT-1 was launched in 2001 by GSLV-D1 from SHAR, Sriharikota.
APRIL 19
India’s first satellite, Ary- abhata — named after the 5th century astronomer and mathematician — was launched in 1975, by a Soviet Kosmos-3M rocket from Kapustin Yar.

Jawaharlal Nehru Universi- ty was established in 1969.

Central Rice Research Institute was set up in 1946 at Bidhyadharpur, Cuttack, Odisha, with an experimental farmland of 60 hectares.
World Book and Copyright Day.
APRIL 24
Central Leather Research Institute was established in 1948 in Chennai.
The largest ball point
pen — 5.5 m or 18 ft in length and weighing 37.23 kg — was measured and presented in Hyderabad in 2011. It was made by Acha- rya Makunuri Srinivasa.

World Malaria Day.

Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of the most globally well- known of all Indian math- ematicians, died in 1920 in Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, at the age of 32.
APRIL 27
Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru, founded by Sir CV Raman, was registered as a Society in 1934.
APRIL 28
IMS-1, previously referred to as TWSat (Third World Satellite) and CARTOSAT- 2A were launched by PSLV- C9 on April 28, 2008.
APRIL 30
INS Sindhughosh, the first submarine of Indian Navy, was commissioned in 1986 in the then USSR, under the command of Commander K C Varghese.
