         developing superior refractories for new gen steel making is one of the major initiatives to augment utilisation of Indian raw materials and removing im- purities to improve performance.
· Bio-ceramic implants and regenerative medicine: Ceramic-based implants (bone, joints, hips, eyeball) for assistive prosthesis have been developed that
are likely to serve as affordable health- care solutions for the common people. Use of sugar-glass nano-particle based encapsulation system for tissue engineer- ing and application of bioactive glass for wound dressing are among other areas of focus.
· Membrane technologies for water purification: Ceramic membrane-based water purification systems to remove arsenic and iron from groundwater and purification of tannery waste water, etc. have been developed and installed in sev- eral locations.
· Sensors and devices: FBG based sensors for structural health monitor- ing; nano-biosensors and microfluidics for detection of diabetes from breath; and detection of pesticide detection in food are among important themes.
Additionally, there have been impor- tant knowledge base creation and devel- opment in the domains of advanced coat- ings, composites, energy storage devices, wearable electronics, membrane-based gas separation techniques and solid ox- ide fuel cells for energy applications.
The Institute has forged close connect with several leading industries and MSMEs in order to enable front-ending its knowledge base. Technologies apart from licensing are also often co-devel- oped with industrial partners. Industrial connections include Tata Steel, Bharat Electronics, BHEL, ONGC, NTPC, Gharada Chemicals, Prism Johnson, Ap- plied Optical Technologies, Rollabs, Vic- tor Engineering etc. to name only a few.

sector both through achieving social inclusion and also through augmenting livelihoods. Several state governments including those of West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Nagaland, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh among others have in- vested on the institutional technologies. Social connects have also involved out- reach programmes for school students, skill development and training for pot- ters and artisans, participation in various outdoor exhibitions, etc.
Institutions flourish on vibrant peer rela- tions, collaboration and linkages. CSIR- CGCRI has several established linkages with academic institutions such as IITs, universities and colleges. International collaboration has been carried out with more than a dozen countries.
The institute trains young researchers in various domains of glass and ceramics for their PhD degrees, with around five- 10 graduating each year either through CSIR’s own Academy (the Academy of

Scientific and Innovative Research) or through other universities. The cutting- edge research fuels publication of more than 170 publications in SCI journals every year and maintains a portfolio of around 76 in-force patents in India and abroad, that undergoes addition by four- five numbers annually. Mandate for pro- viding scientific and technical services is fulfilled through state-of-the-art test- ing and characterisation services using sophisticated instrumentation facilities that are made available to various users.
CSIR-CGCRI has a history of serving needs for Indian industry and for sup- porting efforts for tech indigenisation. Several of its present initiatives such as those of specialty glasses, advanced ceramics, coatings and composites, re- fractories, etc. would drive Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. For example, CSIR- CGCRI has developed synthetic refrac- tory aggregates for high temperature applications to minimise import for the same; it is also in the process of devel- oping larger size Nd-doped phosphate glasses for high power lasers; it is sup- porting ISRO in developing space grade optical glasses. Its outreach centre at Khurja has developed LED bulb heat sink that were previously being import- ed from Korea and China. Thus CSIR- CGCRI envisages to drive Atmanirbhar Bharat by energising the atomic energy, defence, space, telecom, steel and various other industrial sectors.
